Programme notes
Obsession, compulsion, overachievement and addiction. Common conditions in the fast-paced world of stress-management, restructuring, and the competitive edge? Or perhaps the abyss bordering on genius? The slow distortion of reality which occurs in this musical journey is not that of a brilliant scientist or high-end stock broker, but a woodpecker who just can't stop. We follow his fate over four sections in which his manic pecking finally means his own destruction, but not without the pathos of his own awareness of his fate and inability to change it. Vleggaar's colourful orchestral work was awarded the NOG Incentive Price in the Dutch Balletorchestra (Holland Symfonia) 'Young Composers Project 2002'
