Programme notes
Fünf, a commission for the NSO, is my fifth orchestra piece. To celebrate that fact I decided to reward myself with a little experiment. The exact procedure of that experiment is a technical story, but revolves around a musical phenomenon know as the circle of fifths. If you ascend in perfect fifths from a given note, you'll always eventually come back to the note you've started with. This principle was both a construction element and a sardonic obstacle for myself in Fünf - how to make an engaging composition with a dry technical procedure? I use the idea of returning to starting points often in my music - I am fascinated by the experience of returning home, while having been changed by what you've encountered during a journey. In that respect, the final chord of Fünf will be exactly the same as the opening chord, although it will sound completely different - is this really how we began?
