Programme notes
When the Axyz Ensemble commissioned a piece from Giel Vleggaar, he picked up the challenge with a twinkle in his eye. Knowing that the members of the ensemble have a taste for complextity, Vleggaar presented them with his version of an obstacle race, while still maintaining his own transparent style. It begins with a hypnotic line in the high register, spread over various instruments which slowly develops into a lyrical voice that becomes increasingly self-assured until it finds its way to a funky, rhythmic escape. The title--with its caption and motto though willing to escape --points directly to the character of the piece. With its frozen licks, its evasions and its expectant, open end, Vleggaar means to bring to mind a lab rat. This rat has finally escaped and after a wild chase has finally found a safe corner. But for how long?
