Programme notes
Giel Vleggaar (1974) playfully intertwines the most disparate styles from various historical eras, all the while keeping his background in pop and jazz firmly on the forefront. In Appalachia, written in 2004 for the Nieuw Ensemble, bluegrass, bebop and avantgarde entered into an explosive marriage; in Atomic UFO Saves the Day (Again) we are witness to steaming bassguitar lines of soloist Mark Haanstra in a science fiction music setting. Influences from Jaco Pastorius to Jerry Goldsmith and John Williams are forged into a plethora of funky outer-spaceness, with the promise of a visit from the great mothership (again) to boot.
